Privacy Notice

Last updated: 9 October 2026

This website, theageofintelligence.ie, is the author website for Gerard McNamara’s book The Age of Intelligence. This notice explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how it is handled, and the rights you have. It is provided in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018.

1. Who is responsible for your data

The data controller is Gerard McNamara, author and operator of this website, based in Ireland. If you have any questions about this notice or about how your personal data is handled, you can contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].

2. What personal data we collect

We only collect the personal data you choose to give us:

  • Mailing list sign-ups. When you join the mailing list we store the first name and email address you provide, together with the date you signed up and the page the sign-up came from.
  • Messages you send us. When you email one of the addresses on this site (for example reader feedback, media, speaking or general enquiries), we receive and keep your email address, any name you include, and the content of your message so that we can reply. Messages sent to [email protected] are also stored in this website’s database so they can be read and answered.

We do not ask for or store payment details on this site — the book is sold through Amazon, which operates under its own privacy policy. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

3. Cookies and analytics

The public pages of this website do not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics or tracking tools, and we do not build visitor profiles. A session cookie is used only for the private administrator login, which is not available to the public.

4. Why we use your data and our legal basis

  • To send you the mailing list updates you asked for, and to send you the free resource offered at sign-up. Our legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time.
  • To read and reply to messages you send us. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in responding to people who contact us.

5. Who your data is shared with

We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it for anyone else’s marketing. We use a small number of trusted service providers who process data on our behalf:

  • Our website and database hosting provider, which stores the site and the mailing list records.
  • The service that delivers the welcome email and notification emails sent from this site.
  • Our email mailbox provider, which hosts the reader and author email addresses.

These providers act only on our instructions. We may also disclose data if required to do so by law.

6. Transfers outside the EEA

Some of our service providers may store or process data outside the European Economic Area. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognised under the GDPR — such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses — so that your data continues to receive an equivalent level of protection.

7. How long we keep your data

We keep mailing list details for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your details, we remove them promptly. We keep messages you send us for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and for a reasonable period afterwards, then delete them.

8. Your rights under the GDPR

You have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you;
  • have inaccurate data corrected;
  • have your data erased;
  • restrict or object to how we use your data;
  • receive your data in a portable format;
  • withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting earlier processing.

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within one month.

9. Unsubscribing

You can leave the mailing list at any time by emailing [email protected] and asking to be removed. We will take you off the list and delete your details.

10. Complaints

If you are concerned about how your personal data has been handled, please contact us first so we can try to put things right. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Irish supervisory authority:
